The Casambi Solution

The Casambi solution is based on Bluetooth Low Energy, the state-of-the-art wireless technology and the only low power wireless technology in all modern smartphones, tablets and even smartwatches, making it the only mainstream and future proof low power radio technology in the world.

Bluetooth Low Energy was developed at Nokia Research Center where the founders of Casambi worked. That’s why Casambi has had the unique advantage in realizing the potential of Bluetooth Low Energy early on. Casambi started the development of the solution before there were any Bluetooth Low Energy devices on the market

Casambi wireless lighting control systems are fully scalable and are suited equally well for simple small one room solutions to whole house technology and complex multi-story commercial buildings.

LED Lighting Technology is the official Casambi distribution partner for the Channel Islands. We work closely with our UK and Ireland national distributor, Holders Technology Ltd and also Casambi head office in Finland to design and specify your Casambi network installation ensuring that the perfect solution is provided to offer ultimate flexibility.

Wireless Mesh Network

On top of Bluetooth Low Energy, the Casambi technology provides a mesh network where all the intelligence of the system is replicated in every node and, in such a way, creates a system with no single points of failure.

Such self-organising wireless mesh network can control a large number of fixtures from any point. It also allows for firmware updates over the network, allowing any kind of changes to be made over-the-air. In this kind of fully distributed and symmetric architecture, any unit can go offline and catch up from others when they return back online.

The Casambi devices are smart on their own and only connected when needed. An Internet connection is not necessary for normal operation, it is just needed for user interface configurations to be sent or recalled from the cloud service

Casambi App

The Casambi app works as one of the user interfaces in a Casambi lighting control solution, as the commissioning tool and as well as a remote gateway. The Casambi app works with iOS as well as Android devices, like smartphones, tablets and smartwatches. The app is free to download by any end-user.

The Casambi app is made by user interface experts and in a way, that anyone – regardless of technical proficiency – can use it. The Casambi lighting control technology gives a possibility for Casambi’s partners to implement and develop anything needed for a full-featured lighting control system, but the Casambi app only shows in the user interface the functionality that is relevant to that particular installation. Therefore, the Casambi app is equally well suitable for the professional lighting market as well as the residential field

User Interfaces

Casambi offers a large variety of possibilities for a user to interact with the lighting depending on the user’s individual requirements. The app for smartphones, tablets and smartwatches is the most elaborated user interface. Besides the app, traditional wall switches, push buttons, Casambi’s own scene controllers and many other control points can be used.

Thanks to the Casambi Bluetooth module and the versatile customisable software, all of Casambi’s partners can develop their own user interfaces for a Casambi lighting control system. All of the partner products are compatible with each other as well as with all Casambi’s native products

Kinetic Smart Switches

Our range of EnOcean Smart Switches require no power supply or batteries, they are powered kinetically, whenever a rocker switch is pressed or released enough electrical energy is created to send the signal to the Casambi system. The switch plates are flush mounted and do not require a back-box so can be fitted to any flat surface. Kinetic self-powered switch modules are available in a vast range of plate and button finishes to suit the requirements of any project.

The Casambi lighting control solution provides all the control options that are expected from a full-featured professional lighting control system.

Light Colour

Casambi offers comprehensive colour control functionality. A user can change the colour of a luminaire simply from the app and also save his/her favourite colours in a colour palette

Sunrise & Sunset

Casambi units are able to calculate the the local sunrise and sunset times. When the location is requested the application is temporarily using GPS to retrieve the current location of the mobile device.

Calendar & Timer

With the calendar and timer functionality scenes and animations can be turned on and off based on a convenient time, date or certain weekdays to fit users’ needs. All the Casambi units keeps track of time.

Colour Temperature

Casambi offers comprehensive colour temperature control functionality.

A user can change the colour temperature for the luminaire just by sliding the finger on top of a luminaire icon.

Grouping

Grouping luminaires in the Casambi app is very easy. Grouping works with the same gestures as grouping apps in your smart device. After grouping, all the luminaires in the group can be controlled all together or the group can be opened for indvidual control.

Scenes

Different lighting situations for different occasions can be created. It is possible to control multiple luminaires with one tap to create the perfect ambience for different occasions and needs. One luminaire can also be used in several scenes.

Animations

Animations are dynamic scenes, where it is possible for the lighting to fade from one scene to another. Animations can be recalled to cycle through different lighting situations once or they can be set on repeat. The duration of each scene and the fade times between scenes can be set

Gallery

Casambi’s unique gallery feature makes control more intuitive than ever. Users simply take photos of a space, or upload a floor plan to the app, and mark the positions of the luminaires. The images then appear in a gallery in the app, users simply tap the one they want to control.

Daylight Sensor

The control solution allows dimming of artificial lighting when daylight is available for achieving maximum lighting quality and reduced energy consumption. Daylight sensors measure the illuminance and report the lux values to the network.

Occupancy Sensor

The Casambi lighting control system supports movement sensors, also overlapping movement sensor information. Motion sensors can be used to save energy and to only have lighting on when it is actually needed.

Control Hierarchy

The Casambi ‘Control hierarchy’ allows co-operation between manual lighting controls (the app, switches and push buttons) and automated lighting controls (sensors and timers) allowing different kinds of overrides modifying the lighting control solution to fit all control logics.

Gateway

With the gateway functionality a Casambi network can be accessed remotely. It is possible to control Casambi enabled luminaires remotely as well as change network settings. To enable the remote access an iOS or an Android device needs to be working in the Casambi network as a gateway

The Casambi system is scalable and is suited equally well for small one room solutions as for big building complexes. The Casambi solution is based on networks and an unlimited amount of networks can be created. Casambi also offers possibilities to turn on and off several networks at the same time or scenes that combines luminaires across networks.

The Custom Elements is a functionality that allows Casambi partners to make unique, features and products within the Casambi ecosystem. The developed products could be controlling blinds, curtains, doors, or any relay equipped gadgets that our imagination allows us, like table height or even a coffee maker. This functionality also makes it possible to control luminaires with motors.

Parameters

Fixture parameters are manufacture specific data about the luminaire in question. Examples of parameters could be LED versions, current consumption, driver version, dimming curve or temperatures. These parameters can be read on demand and also changed from the app by simply writing a new value and sending it.
